I often wonder what motivates different people. What gives you the strength to get up every morning to face the world and its new challenges? Is it money, social status, professional fulfilment, family or maybe worries about your own future? Being aware of what we expect from life, our work and ourselves is very important – that’s why, in this entry, I wanted to discuss this very topic.
Do you sometimes feel like you can’t be bothered?
Do you have days when you want to get back to sleep after waking up to later wake up in a “better world”? Anything you do makes no sense and has no importance? You lose confidence in yourself and your abilities just because you’ve encountered a few obstacles in your path. You don’t know if it’s depression or simply a lack of motivation. Every attempt to start fighting ends in another fiasco. You think to yourself “How many times do I have to do this? I’m probably not fit for anything anyway.” You’re in a state of stagnation. You don’t feel like getting out of bed, going to work or seeing friends. You no longer enjoy your favourite activities, and even though somewhere deep inside you would like to change something, you are afraid of yet another failure and disappointment.
What causes you to lose your motivation?
The lack of motivation and willingness to act can result from many factors. Using my own example, I chose 4 that have been present in my life for many years. Luckily, I’ve managed to find a solution to the lack of motivation. Read on to find out more.
Reason #1 Your goal is not yours
It usually happens because you feel that you have to impress other people. So you choose a goal that doesn’t matter to you. An indication that the goal you have chosen is not your own is that it is difficult for you to describe why it would be important for you to achieve this goal. It’s not important enough for you, and you feel this not only in your mind but also in your heart.
Reason #2 When a problem arises, you run away
You decide on a goal, but when even the slightest adversity appears in your path, you give up. You run away from complications instead of facing them. Why is that? Because it’s easier that way. You sabotage your own actions, knowing deep down that a little effort would make you successful.
Reason #3 You set your expectations too high for yourself
You can easily choose a goal that initially arouses your excitement. Over time, however, your vision does not match up with reality, which makes you feel disappointed and you no longer care about the goal. You compare yourself to others, you start to wonder if the path you have chosen is the right one, you doubt yourself and your skills.
What motivates you?
I often wondered what motivates me to act. What makes me get up every morning and be ready to face new challenges? Self-awareness. It lets you know what you expect from life and tells you what makes you determined to achieve your goals. It allows you to shape your own reality and professional career. So now, can you define what motivates you?
Money? This factor is one of the most frequently quoted. It raises your standard of living, gives you a sense of stability and the possibility to develop and satisfy various needs. Although money is great for increasing productivity, it is a short-term process. Some time ago, Dr Paweł Korzyński mentioned it
“We all have certain expectations and when we reach the state in which we meet our basic needs, adding more money to the pile is no longer as important when compared to other motivating factors. “
Self-development? Raising one’s own qualifications and personal development is another strong motivator. Additional certificates, training, courses and investing in yourself always pays off. Developing your own skills directs your future and makes you a specialist in your profession.
Prestige? Boosting your social status, the recognition and respect of your social circle often acts as an aphrodisiac. Good reputation in your professional life means good working conditions and high human capital. Thanks to this prestige, you are convinced that you are unique and nothing stands in your way of achieving even greater success.
Recognition? Being appreciated is extremely important. It makes you feel like the right person in the right place. It increases your self-confidence, gives you satisfaction and makes you see sense in your work. The matter of recognition and compliments and their impact on motivation is described in the book titled: “Payoff: The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations” written by the behaviourist Professor Dan Ariely:
“(…) compliments are practically free. The person who gives them and the person who receives them all benefit from one. The same situation applies to giving tokens recognition.
How to mobilise yourself to act?
Even the most motivated people in the world sometimes lack the will to act. However, step by step and with a bit of willingness, you can change your attitude. I know that at this point it may seem impossible to you, I also thought so, in fact, I still have these days – you’re not alone. However, I have learned a few things that allow me to regain my motivation, and that can also be useful to you.
Think positive – when you are happy, you become more productive and creative. When you make even the smallest progress, enjoy it and appreciate yourself and your hard work. Remember that by thinking positively, you attract positive experiences and people to yourself – I truly believe it.
Reward yourself – awards always make us feel good, and who says you can’t reward yourself? Every time you manage to complete a goal, give yourself a gift, as even a small trifle will make you feel better.
Lower the bar – don’t ask too much of yourself. It’s only natural that everyone has worse and better days. When you’re not feeling up to it, don’t hold a grudge against yourself that the job you’re doing isn’t 100% of what you expected.
Believe in yourself – always being critical with yourself will lead you to depression. Remember that no one is perfect. Don’t burden yourself with all your failures; there are things even you can’t control, so don’t lose faith in yourself and your abilities – never.
If nothing motivates you, and if you make a list of things to do and you don’t follow it anyway, let go. Maybe it’s just that moment in life, a more challenging day, week, or month. Although you feel depressed and every day you ask yourself: How to think positively when I can’t do anything right? – don’t worry. Wait this period out, focus on the things that make you happy, spend time with your family and friends. Some things just can’t be rushed, and tormenting yourself and constantly thinking that you could do something better, faster and more efficiently won’t help you. Perhaps when you least expect it, your motivation will come back, even with double the strength. I’ll end my litany with one of my favourite quotes, this time by Michael Jordan:
“If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”
